-Dhaka is the world’s newest mega city, with an urban mass of just over 18 million population (based upon United Nations population growth rate projections). There are few urban areas in the world that are growing faster. Historically, nearly one-third of the urban population increase in Bangladesh has been in Dhaka. This seems likely to continue, since the nation has few other urban centers. The second largest, Chittagong, is just one-third the size of Dhaka. At projected urban population growth rates, Dhaka could have 40 million people by 2050. Based on the total l land area and the total population of the city, the population density of Dhaka is about 50,001 people per square mile.
-The literacy rate of the city has been increasing at a very high rate over the past few years. In 2001, about 62% of the city could read and write. Now, around 73% of the population can read and write. This is compared to the national literacy average of 57%.
-The national language of Dhaka is Bengali, so a good portion of the city speaks the language.
Future -
-Sea level rise is expected to force millions of Bangladeshis living along its coast to move to drier ground, which will only make packed and polluted Dhaka more packed and polluted. But a large planned development on the outskirts of Dhaka is hoping to provide a major housing hub and new community center.
